The marriage calculator provides information on the financial implications of marriage for low-income couples. It applies federal and state-specific tax and transfer rules so couples can find out what their net income would be if they live apart, marry or cohabit. While some couples would increase their net income from marrying, others would face financial penalties. The calculator provides a tool to make these consequences transparent.
Mrs. Laura Bush speaks during a celebration of World Refugee Day Friday, June 20, 2008, at the White House.
The Resettlement of Refugees
On June 20, First Lady Laura Bush marked World Refugee Day by honoring the plight of refugees who fled their countries to escape persecution. Over the past 30 years, the United States has accepted over 2.6 million refugees and will take in as many as 80,000 displaced men, women and children in 2008. ACF’s Office of Refugee Resettlement is the federal agency responsible for domestic resettlement which provides benefits and services to help refugees achieve economic self-sufficiency and social adjustment within the shortest time possible following their arrival in the U.S. To learn more about refugee resettlement and other programs that improve the lives of children and families, visit www.acf.hhs.gov/opa.
